A) Character types are established through actions and dialogue as the opening scene starts with the writing of a diary establishing what the film is about, with an epistolary of Bridget reading an entry from her diary.

B) The location is established by an establishing shot of her doing what she is talking about in her diary, going to her mother and father’s house. This is shown through a long shot of a taxi.

C) The narrative is constructed through a voiceover of her thoughts and feelings of the situation. She doesn’t look best please until she meets up with her boyfriend there.

D) The opening reflects the genre of the film as it is a romantic comedy and this is shown through her expressions of being put in this embarrassing situation, followed by an establishing shot of her and her boyfriend running along the fields, re-inacting a movie.

E) The opening is appropriate f a film of this genre as within minutes the genre has been established through choice of dialogue, locations and actions.

F) The first title to be shown is Universal Pictures and StudioCanal, followed by the production company. 2 minutes into the film the cast members are introduced, with the main character being introduced first with her name written in a font with love hearts and an arrow through on the ‘g’ of Renne Zellweger. Hugh Grant’s name is next with the ‘t’ written in the style of a devil fork. This states that he is the bad one in this romantic film. Colin Firth’s name is shown last in this title sequence, with the ‘i’ dotted with a love heart, showing the love match between Renne Zellweger’s character and Colin Firth’s.

G) In my view this is an effective opening as within 3 minutes of the film the viewer can understand the love matches between the characters through the way the actors have been introduced, such as the love hearts and devil forks. The genre is also noticeable through the way the characters act towards each other. The first thing we see is a diary which gets to the point about the film being based around feelings written in a diary.

Prezi

Today I added to my Prezi involving the preliminary task covering all aspects of the questions needing to be answered. As well as this I will be making a second Prezi covering my analysis of Trainspotting by Danny Boyle. This will help when making the opening sequence to a film. Both deadlines are for Wednesday 29th February.

Opening Sequences – Representation

In today’s lesson we viewed the openings of a few films and analysed them. This was to fit in with the new task which has been set. I have to analyse the opening scene of Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle. This will be presented on Prezi. It will include the main characters and a detailed answer using my notes. I have to take notes on camera angles/ movement, shot composition, point of view uses, edits, effects, dialogue, music, lighting and mise-en-scene.

Hide and Seek

In today’s lesson I finished my edited version to the film I made, ‘Hide and Seek’. I am pleased with it as overall I have included: shot reverse shot, match on action and the 180° rule as set in the brief. I now have to complete my Prezi presentatation to show my overall thoughts on my film and the editing along side it. This will include issues encountered and how I solved them etc. Once my editing was complete I had to upload it to Youtube as this was also part of the task. As well as editing, I also made a script to go along side my film once I had made sure I was pleased with the dialogue sections. This was done so on Scripped.com as I am getting used to the format the more I use it as we will be using Scripped.com for every task we are set.

Editing and Prezi

I am continuing with the edit of my film and have one more lesson to complete the editing. Today I began working on my prezi for the analysis of my preliminary task. I have fixed the continuity error at this point by putting in a blackout to show the passing of time as 2 minutes. This was because at the end of one scene I was stood at the curtain and the beginning of the next scene I was sat down. Our deadline is February 29th for everything to be completed. Within the prezi I have to write about:

– Organisation and effectiveness as a team member

– Issues when planning/filming

– Issues when editing

– Demonstrating shot reverse shot, match on action and the 180 rule

– Honestly assess the effectiveness after feedback is received

Editing

In today’s lesson I continued editing. I managed to add an ambient sound of horror to the beginning of my film to add effect. I synced up the audio to my film also which was very hard and time consuming. I had to lower the sounds from the camera when putting audio over the top so it didn’t hinder the effect. I still have a lot to do with my film as I have a jump cut within my film. To cope with this I am going to add a fade (ellipsis) to show a passage of time as this is a continuity error. The main editing of my film is complete I just have to tweak parts to get it to a higher standard. I am enjoying the editing as I am learning many new things although I never knew how long it actually takes to edit a film.

Editing

In today’s lesson I continued to edit my own film. When editing today I added a title scene and a credit scene. I still have to edit the main part of the film so it has continuity as my film includes a jump cut through shortage of film, but I have managed to sync up the audio to the lips on one part of the clip. I was really please with this as I had never done this before and I learnt a lot from this so I will be able to do this in my final film. The problems I encountered whe doing this were when I wanted to cut part of the clip, I had to use the blade tool for both the audio and film so once I was happy with it, it still managed to be in sync.

Editing

In today’s lesson I began editing my own version of the film. I found this interesting as I was editing it on my own and I included the clips I liked without having to agree amongst the group. I tried to include the best bits from each take although it became tricky when syncing up the number counting when changing between 2 takes. I have not yet synced up the microphone audio to my film as I was struggling having never done this before. Although working on your own is easy when choosing the film clips and editing the film to your liking I have found that I would have relied on somebody within the group to help with the syncing of the audio, whilst struggling on my own. This has given me a learning experience which will be useful when doing my final piece. In tomorrow’s lesson I shall be continuing with the editing and syncing of the audio, adding a title page and starting on my final overall script.
